~ The History of Little Rock Air Force Base ~
Discover the History of Little Rock Air Force BaseIn November of 1953, the construction began for the Little Rock Air Force Base and in August of 1955 the Strategic Air Command officially activated it.  The base hosted the 70th Reconnaissance Wing and the SAC's 384th Bombardment Wing.

Announced by the Air Force in 1960, the base became home to 18 Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.  To help support the nation during the Cuban Missile Crisis, 11 B-47's were deployed by the 384 BMW all around the US in 1962.  Also, in that same year the 308th Strategic Missile wing was established by the SAC; it was the Little Rock Air Force Base Titan II missile operations host organization.

The first Titan II missiles were installed in Searcy, Arkansas in February of 1963 and a variety of relief efforts occurred at the base in 1965.  The relief effort was in response to a tornado that came through Conway, Arkansas in April of 1965.

The base went through big changes in the early 1970s.  In March of that year the first C-130s started to arrive.  The Little Rock Air Force Base was officially changed Tactical Air Command after being a SAC.  The host responsibilities were taken over by the 314th Tactical Airlift Wing.  Training and the C-130 tactical airlift became the base's chief mission.  Two C-130 training units were assigned along with two C-130 operational units.  The Base and the TAW converted to Military Airlift Command in 1974.

The Air War over Serbia was supported by the 314 AW from the mid 90s to the late 90s.
