Hudgens was a fisherman and hunter, who discovered three and half miles of England when he was traveling through the area trying to avoid the deep waters of the well-known Arkansas River flood. Hudgens created the Hudgen's Post Office where he served as postmaster. He also served as justice of the peace for several years.
Many early men and women worked very hard against impassible barriers; the lands covered thousands of acres with rich soil, but was covered by a huge forest of very large trees. The area was a full of wildlife making it a hunter's paradise. There was an abundance of small game in all varieties along with panthers, bears, and deer. The forest did have small clearings in various spots where settlers began to build homes.
