The birth of Lonoke came after the Civil War when the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad rerouted its tracks three miles south of the future Lonoke.  The rerouting of the tracks completely destroyed the town of Brownsville, where the tracks once laid.

The town of Lonoke was named by Major Rombaugh and Robinson.  Rombaugh was a civil engineer doing survey work for the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad right of way.  The decided to name the town for a lone giant red oak tree that stood in the middle of the prairie.  Rombaugh came up with the spelling, wanting to give it a Native American sound of Lo-no-kah.  Since the naming of Lonoke everyone has pronounced it as Lone-oak.

In 1869, the town-lot plan survey was completed by Hamilton Reynolds and Isaac Hicks.  W.K. Hocker and Company, the general store, was the first business in the new town of Lonoke just before the town survey was complete in 1868.  Then in 1869, William Goodrum and T.C. Beard opened a general store in town.

On January 22, 1872, Lonoke was officially incorporated and held elections for its first officials.  Isaac Hicks became Mayor.  Lonoke County was established on April 16, 1873.  By 1910, the population of Lonoke had grown to 1,547.

The first courthouse was actually the former Prairie County Courthouse from Brownsville.  The building was disassembled, and moved to Lonoke where it was reassembled.  A new three story courthouse was built in 1928.  The building still serves as the Lonoke courthouse.
